Why We Sing
Here’s an interesting Podcast/Sermon/Talk/Whatever I recently listened to by Rob Bell and Troy Hatfield. They’re discussing something specific about worship – that being the question of “why we sing?”.
Ever thought about that? Why music, God? I have.
It’s definitely an interesting and thought-provoking listen with some profound “aha” moments. I feel like there was an element (or maybe an entire side of a coin) that was left out of the discussion, but I guess you can’t do it all in one talk. I’ll let you listen and see if you notice the same thing. Feel free to hit up the comments here and discuss your thoughts about it.

The podcast was quite entertaining, but I found myself wishing I had not read so much about worship or been mentored in worship leadership. On one hand it was refreshing to hear “regular” people talk “regularly” about music in church from a “regular” and honest perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed the different point of view. On the other hand, I’m obviously more conservative than I take credit for: I kept waiting for all my worship “shibboleths” to be said correctly. “Worship is for God,” or, “Worship is an act of spiritual warfare,” or, “Worship exalts the Trinity while shaping us to be more like Christ,” or, “Worship exposes us to God’s grace and involves our response.” Yeah, this was good for me. It was good for me to put down the book study I’m doing on Marva Dawn and listen to something like this. (For what it’s worth, I used to minister not far from Grand Rapids, where these men spoke from. Some of what they said and didn’t say is contextually appropriate.)
Yeah, I hear ya Lynn. I guess I should give them the benefit of the doubt and grant that the ultimate point of worship being God’s glory was assumed, but I did find myself waiting for that to be articulated at some point. Some good stuff about how God has sovereignly set things up to work the way they do, though.
